Birmingham is on a journey to becoming a cleaner city with cleaner air. Air pollution is having a harmful effect on the health of people in the city. Improving air quality will mean more people, especially children, live healthier lives.
The Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area where targeted action is taken to improve air quality, in particular by discouraging the most polluting vehicles from entering the zone. Birmingham plans to introduce a Clean Air Zone covering all roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road (but not the Middleway itself) during 2020. No vehicle is banned in the zone, but those which do not have clean enough engines will have to pay a daily charge if they travel within the area.
