Charges and operation
Refunds of the daily fee
Only apply for a Clean Air Zone daily charge refund if:
- your vehicle details were incorrect on GOV.UK vehicle checker and you have paid to enter the Clean Air Zone
- you have driven into the Clean Air Zone in a non-compliant vehicle and have subsequently paid the daily charge for the wrong date
A daily charge made in advance of a planned journey into the Clean Air Zone is non-refundable
- a diversion organised by Birmingham City Council has led to an unplanned journey into the Clean Air Zone, for which you have paid the daily charge
If you believe your vehicle meets the eligibility criteria but is showing as subject to the daily charge, contact Clean Air Zone Support to request your vehicle record be checked and updated
- if required using their online form
- or phone 0300 029 8888. Lines are open:
- 8:00am to 7:00pm, Monday to Friday
- 8:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday
Unless advised otherwise, you should still pay the daily charge within the 13-day payment window.
Once you have updated your details with the DVLA and you have established that your vehicle meets the required emission standards and/or is not chargeable, you can apply to us for a refund for the payments you have already made for this vehicle to drive in the zone.
Please remember to keep proof of payment and receipts.
If you have an approved local exemption from Birmingham City Council, you do not need to contact Clean Air Zone Support and you do not need to pay the charge. The exemption permit is only valid from the date you receive it and refunds will not be issued for any payments made whilst you were waiting for your exemption application to be processed.
You can read the Guidelines for the consideration of representations and cancellation of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued for being in a Clean Air Zone (CAZ)
