Progress in delivering clean air for Birmingham - January 2026
Clean Air Strategy overview
The Clean Air Strategy published in 2022 set out how the council aims to reduce pollution across Birmingham. It was developed to support cleaner air in every neighbourhood and to help protect the health of residents, especially those most at risk from the harms of air pollution.
The strategy guided work across the city through a set of 8 actions. These actions were shaped by the 5 priority themes and were designed to:
- support behaviour change
- reduce emissions
- improve how information about air quality is shared
Actions
The strategy outlined 8 actions to raise awareness and improve air quality:
- Implement a Clean Air Zone
- Seek ongoing feedback to the strategy
- Provide clear accessible air quality and traffic data
- Increase air quality monitoring across the city
- Implement air quality monitoring and awareness for schools
- Investigate ways to reduce emissions from Non-Road Mobile Machinery
- Increase awareness of the impacts of wood burners, fireworks and bonfires
- Deliver anti-idling campaigns
The following pages describe the progress made on each action and how this work is helping to improve air quality across Birmingham.
