Early Notice Letters

If you have received an Early Notice Letter advising you that your vehicle will be subject to daily charges when the Clean Air Zone goes live on 1 June 2021, find out what to do next. Why have I received an Early Notice Letter?

How do I pay the Clean Air Zone charge?

From 1 June 2021, if you drive through Birmingham's Clean Air Zone in a non-compliant vehicle that is subject to the daily charge, then you will need to make a payment.

Check if I will be charged

The charges are:

  • £8 for cars, taxis and LGVs (vans)
  • £50 for coaches, buses and HGVs

You can pay online using the Government's payment system or you can call the Government's Clean Air Zone team on 0300 029 8888 for assistance. Please do not contact Birmingham City Council as we cannot process your payments.

You must pay either during the allocated 13-day payment window which is:

  • 6 days before the day of your visit
  • the day of your visit
  • 6 days after the day of your visit

If you do not pay within the allocate timeframe, you will receive a fixed penalty notice in the post of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Please note you will not receive a notification, such as a text or email to notify you that you have driven through the zone in a non-compliant vehicle and that payment is due. The onus is on you as a driver to know if your vehicle is subject to the charge, whether you have driven into the zone and when to make payment.

Businesses with multiple fleet vehicles can set up a business account to manage and process payments. You can watch a demonstration video of how to use the system online.
