How to apply

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for the Vehicle Scrappage Scheme via an online application form. You will need a Brum account to apply.

If you do not have a Brum account, you will need to create one to apply for a grant:

All applicants to the scheme must be able to evidence and upload documents to show that:

  • they own a non-compliant vehicle and have owned this prior to the 1st of June 2021 (upload V5c)
  • the vehicle is road worthy (upload current insurance certificate)
  • they meet the eligibility criteria (upload relevant evidence)

Format of Evidence

You may upload photos, scans, or screenshots, including photos from your phone. However, they must show the entire page and these need to be clear enough to read. Files can be uploaded in JPG or PDF formats.

Important notes

Do not scrap your vehicle until you application has been approved.

We will only accept a Certificate of Destruction from a registered Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).

Benefit disclaimer

Some low income, means-tested benefits are affected by the amount of money you receive or have in savings.

The Vehicle Scrappage Scheme grant payment may be treated as savings/ earning for any means-tested benefits you claim. If this grant payment is treated as savings, and takes you over the permitted savings, your entitlement to claim a means tested benefit may be affected. It is recommended that you seek external advice. BCC (Birmingham City Council) will have no liability to you if the Vehicle Scrappage Scheme grant payment affects any means-tested benefits that you receive.

Private registration

Prior to scrapping a vehicle with a private number plate, you are required to visit the Government website Private (personalised) number plates: Take a private number off a vehicle and follow all the instructions.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM)

You can visit Transport for West Midlands - Swift and tickets to view the various TfWM Swift account options available.

You can redeem your travel credits to buy Swift products by visiting Transport for West Midlands - How to claim your Travel Credits.
